A very handsome Georgian oak panelled settle with modern checked wool seat cushi
Overall width: 71 in. (180.4 cm.) Overall height: 38 in. (96.5 cm.) Overall depth: 24 in. (61 cm.) Seat height: 15 1/2 in. (39.5 cm.) Seat cushion height: 2 3/8 in. (6 cm.) Arm height (from floor): 23 3/4 in. (60.4 cm.) Arm height (from seat): 8 in. (20.3 cm.) This impressive oak settle, which I believe could be of English countryside origin, has lovely simple decorative features consistent with the Georgian style. These include five fielded and shield-shaped panels and outswept turned arms. It is raised on seemingly original cabriole legs at the front and squared legs to the back. Lovely original peg joints throughout. The seat is supported by later slats, but includes two original pieces. These are covered by a later board, which creates an even surface for the modern cushion seat. I love the patina of this settle, which would grace any period hallway. Having been recently waxed, it was decided to leave the panelling as was to create a subtle two-tone effect on the wood. The colouring of the oak grain is lighter to the front and very warm to the rear - as illustrated here. Overall the settle is in good, original condition. It would benefit from being reinforced with corner braces, I think, as the back is ever-so slightly loose. It is absolutely structurally sound but this could be improved. As well as discrete repairs throughout, there is a clean crack to the edge of one of the panels, which I have illustrated here. Finally there are a couple of the underside corner edge details missing. Please note this is currently stored in London, but please get in touch to receive competitive shipping rates.
