Early 19th century hand-coloured map of Scotland by John Thomson
Early 19th century hand-coloured map of Scotland by John Thomson (1777 - c.1841) Unframed dimensions: 24 x 20 in (60.9 x 50.9 cm) Framed dimensions: 29 1/2 x 24 1/2 in. (75 x 62 cm.) Dated 1815 Presented in a modern ‘Hogarth’ style frame. This beautifully detailed map is typical of Thomson’s approach to redefining cartography, abandoning the overtly decorative style of the eighteenth century in favour of matter-of-fact representation. It was issued in Thomson’s celebrated New General Atlas of 1817 (published in Edinburgh, plate 12). The map is in generally good condition, especially given its large size. The original centrefold creases are showing slight discolouration and there are a couple of repaired tears to the centre-top and bottom right corner (see images). It would benefit from a new mount. ~ Free delivery to mainland United Kingdom. Overseas customers: please request a shipping estimate and I will endeavour to procure one within 24 hours.
