A very charming, atmospheric oil painting depicting field workers harvesting, possibly for apples. Painted during a period when younger Scottish artists were heavily influenced by the Glasgow Boys and in turn the French impressionists and earlier Barbizon school.

The artist Archibald Buchanan was based in Edinburgh and exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy from 1886 to 1898. There are two labels on the verso, one handwritten - presumably by the artist - with the work’s title and his address on Buccleuch Street. The other label is for a local framer, who presumably supplied the frame that still remains on the painting.

The painting remains in very good aesthetic condition, a light clean would enhance the contrast of the bright sky and the trees’ silhouettes.
